Body Beast!!! Oh yea, baby!!
Body Beast….sounds pretty scary and intimidating huh? This is supposedly the name of a brand new program being released by Team Beachbody (the same people behind the highly successful P90X, TurboFire and the new Les Mills Pump). There is very, very limited information out on this new program, but I’m already getting excited for the Body Beast workout. If you know who’s creating it, then you are going to be excited. Sagi Kalev ( born July 30, 1971 in Tel Aviv) is an Israeli fitness model, bodybuilding title-holder, and nutritionist and resident of Dallas, Texas. Kalev immigrated to the United States in 1993 to pursue bodybuilding and modeling. After a four-year tour of duty in the Israeli Army, including participation in Operation Desert Storm, Sagi resumed his weightlifting and bodybuilding interests, capturing two “Mr. Israel” titles in the process, as well as his college education, graduating with a degree in physical education and a minor in nutrition from the University of Central Florida.
What Is The Body Beast Workout?
The Body Beast workout is going to be Team Beachbody’s FIRST workout they’ve put together that will be solely focused on helping people get the most ripped, muscular body possible. This program isn’t about losing weight; It’s about gaining pure, hard muscle while minimizing/losing the fat. Do you get it?? That’s pretty exciting to all of us at Team Beachbody, because they do not have a workout program designed SOLELY for muscle gain. While you can definitely add size with P90X, that wasn’t the main intent behind the program. P90X was created as a more well rounded program for anyone who wanted to lose weight, just get toned, or to even add some size. I have seen what it’s done for so many people!!
Body Beast promises to incorporate the classic and the latest and greatest body building techniques that work and gives results. The Body Beast workout isn’t about pumping yourself full of steroids or using crazy expensive gym machines. That’s pretty cool because I’ve spent a lot of time waiting for gym machines… and that is never fun!! I promise. That’s why I like working out at home.

Why Sagi for the Body Beast Workout?
He helped hundreds of people to prepare and win numerous national and international body building/fitness competitions all over the world. So he sounds like he knows his stuff and knows what works and what doesn’t work as far bodybuilding. Sagi Kalevhas been a bodybuilder since the age of 16. Wow!!

Who Is The Body Beast Workout For?
The Body Beast workout is for anyone who wants to gain pure muscle mass. From what I heard, they’ve designed the program in a way so that you don’t have to be a NFL superstar athlete to be able to jump into this program. You could just be a beginner who wants to add some muscle mass. Or you could even already be a body builder but just want a program you can do from the comfort of your home. It sounds like they’ve designed Body Beast for anyone, regardless of your fitness level.
With any body building workout program you need to be prepared to invest some money in yourself. It takes a lot of food (no junk food) to gain pure muscle mass. Nutrition is ALWAYS important when doing a workout program, but when you are trying to gain a lot of muscle nutrition is even more critical to your success. If you don’t eat the right kind of food, you’ll probably still gain muscle, but you’ll also gain fat in the process. I always put nutrition first because health is my first and top priority… and nutrition is the key to all of that.
The nutrition plan that comes with Body Beast is going to be focused 100% around the mission to add muscle mass while minimizing fat gain. And that’s all good for all of us that are excited for it!

Stay Tuned For More Details On The Body Beast Workout…
The last I heard, the Body Beast workout is going to be released towards the end of 2012. I’ll have gone through Les Mills Pump, the hybrid month and the 3 month Hybrid schedule, and be done with P90X2 before all of that happens… so imagine the beast I’m going to be by 2013!!

Eating… what do you choose?

I know that so many of us struggle with what to eat – and it’s a back and forth game almost most of the time. Beans or no beans. Gluten-free or whole grains – or both. Paleo or Vegetarian? Well I’m glad that you can choose what works for you – and not even the Paleo groups are starting to share how to live Paleo with a vegetarian diet. One of the best starter cookbooks out there is ‘The Vegetarian Paleo Recipe Book which is a great little ebook I found on Amazon.
The reviews say:
“great cookbook. Tasty, unusual, creative and easy“
- Grace Darby
“I’ve downloaded quite a few cookbooks lately and this probably the best one I’ve found for my situation“
- JustAskJulie
“perfect answer to no gluten recipes“
- Kristie
“wonderful vegetarian recipes good for us all“
- Marg Rutan
“good food even if you’re not a vegetarian“
- Sandy Bose
The Vegetarian Paleo Recipe Cookbook features 47 simple and tasty meals free from gluten, grains, dairy, soy and refined sugar starting with breakfast to lunch, dinner and dessert all are very important to me and being clean and free of soy is also very important to me.
Another great start would be to take the Whole30 Program from the Whole9 Group.
Here are a few Paleo vegetarian meal ideas to get you started on your Paleo journey that I found somewhere when I was looking for vegetarian options.
Wilted spinach surprise – Place a tablespoon of natural oil in a skillet. Sautee a 1/4 cup of sweet onions and sweet red peppers. Add ¼ cup of chopped walnuts, ½ cup of chopped apples. Heat for three minutes. Add a large amount of fresh spinach leaves with a small amount of natural oil. Inlcude any spices you desire. Allow the heat and the steam to wilt the spinach down. Stir and serve very hot.
Lettuce wrap fajitas – Cook a wide variety of peppers and onions in a skillet with a small amount of oil. You can have green peppers, red peppers, jalapenos, yellow, and orange peppers. Add garlic, cumin and chili powder for more flavor. When peppers are to your liking (shorter amount of time peppers will be crisper, longer amount of time they will be sweeter and soft), place a spoonful of peppers in your favorite lettuce leaves, roll up and enjoy!

Read the labels
I love being a nutritional leader. And as such I feel like you need to know about anything new on the market – that may or may not be in something you are thinking about drinking or eating. I told you all about Fibersol syrup and Fibersol-2 (just corn people … but a new brand of it) Now let me teach you a new ingredient: They say it’s more affordable… but do you know what’s in it? “SolaGrain”. Do you want to know what that is? It’s mostly a filler, and full of corn and soy. SolaGrain is:
Soya protein extract (soy)
Soya protein extract (soy)
Oat fiber
Soya fiber (soy)
Psyllium
Maltodextrin (corn)
Linseed fiber
Beet fiber
Linseed protein
Cellulose
Thickening agent: guar
Emulsifier: Lecithin (soy)
I saw this as a main ingredient in a new protein shake called ProFit by ItWorks. That same drink also contained Sustain-It… again more soy. Do you realize that soy is in everything these days, and it’s changing your body because it’s like estrogen. And the plastics in your environment are like estrogen. Do you really want to save a couple dollars by buying a cheaper product and raise your cancer risk? And soy is very bad for men. Men’s Health says ” The unassuming soybean has silently infiltrated the American diet as what might just be the perfect protein source: It’s cheap and vegetarian, and could even unclog our hearts. But there may be a hidden dark side to soy, one that has the power to undermine everything it means to be male/ Read more at Men’s Health: http://www.menshealth.com/nutrition/soys-negative-effects#ixzz1qKozNLds
I love the ItWorks wraps, but I think that you can’t compare broccoli to oranges. One of these shakes has much more dense super nutrition than the other. The proof is in the ingredients and the fact that even Discovery and Oprah have talked about the amazing superfoods and the extent that Beachbody goes to to get these ingredients for you – well again you can’t compare them. Shakeology is just a better product, and better for you. Make sure you keep these things in mind when shopping. Don’t let yourself buy something that is the pink slime of the protein shake world. My daughter drinks Shakeology (1/2 a scoop) every morning. I HAVE to be okay with what she is putting into her little body. It’s a healthful choice for me, not a monetary one. Drink Shakeology – Health Simplified!
So when you see someone posted the ad below… remember the real comparison and what it means for your health. Be educated.

Read the ingredient lists on any product that you will eat or even just put on your body. Where do the sugars and carbs come from? Are they mostly from a natural fruits? DO you care if you have no sugars, but also get none of the super antioxidant protection for your body at a celular level? One of the reasons I loved the ItWorks wraps was the quality of ingredients. Just like with Beachbody I don’t love every supplement they put out – and I won’t promote every product of theirs because of it. Read, think, buy only the best products for your body. YOU are the key and YOU are what matters. Take care of YOU will you?

How Much Protein Do You Need After A Tough Workout?
If there is one nutrient that you need to support your training and recovery, protein would be it! All the exercise in the world won’t help you build muscle or get lean if it is not supported with proper nutrition, which should always include a good dose of some high-quality protein or high quality protein powder.
Many people argue the merits of whether you should have protein before you workout or after, when in reality the best time is both! The purpose of having protein before you exercise is to prevent muscle protein breakdown and to promote muscle protein synthesis. This is fancy talk for preserving the muscle you already have, and helping to promote the growth of new muscle tissue.
In addition to consuming some quality protein before you exercise, you should also consume some after as your muscles are highly receptive to incoming nutrients after a training session. The purpose of protein after training is to simply continue the benefits of pre-training protein, to preserve the muscle you already have and help create new muscle tissue.
That’s the big picture anyway, but let’s dig a little deeper and see more ways in which protein around our training can improve our results!
Protein Before You Train
Recent research has shown that consuming protein before exercise can decrease, or at least prevent the increase of, markers of muscle damage (myoglobin, creatine kinase and myofibrillar protein degradation) more than groups who consumed just carbohydrates or placebo.
This is one of the key reasons to have protein before you train, as reducing the damage to the muscles can improve recovery time and cause better adaptations to training over the long-term.
In addition, protein consumed before training will also flood your blood stream with amino acids as your body needs them, beginning the process of creating new muscle while you are training!
Aim to consume about 15-40 grams of protein within 30-90 minutes before training, depending on your size and needs. This can be consumed either in a shake or a mixed meal, again depending on what best fits your needs.
Protein After You Train
While most people know they should have some protein after they exercise, they often believe that they must have a shake or meal immediately after finishing their last set. The fact is if you consumed an adequate amount of quality protein within 30-90 minutes before you started exercising, then there is no need for immediate consumption. In reality as long as some quality protein is consumed within an hour after cessation of training, you are golden.
On the flip side of that, waiting too long can compromise the beneficial adaptations to training, and decrease your results. So while you don’t have to slam down a shake immediately after training, it wouldn’t be in your best interest to wait for 3 hours either.
A perfect example of the importance of having protein around your training was a recent 10 week trial where the researchers had subjects consume a protein/carbohydrate mixture before and after training, and another group consume that same mixture at the two points in the day furthest from the training.
The group that surrounded their training with the protein/carbohydrate mixture had greater gains in lean mass and strength, while also losing some body fat to boot (the other group actually gained some fat). This clearly indicates that surrounding your training with adequate amounts of high-quality protein (and carbohydrates) will maximize results, even if your total intake for the day is the same.
Aim to consume about 15-40 grams of protein within 60 minutes after training, again depending on your size and needs. Whether this is consumed as a shake or a solid meal is solely dependent on what best fits your needs.
The take home point is that it is a good idea to surround your training, both before and after, with high quality protein to maximize the benefits of exercise. This will minimize protein breakdown, and maximize your ability to build or maintain lean muscle mass.
The Shocking Truth About Your Workouts: Warning: Ignoring this science literally robs your body of the nutrients it so desperately needs to shed fat optimally. Please do NOT make the mistake of ignoring it. To learn more head on over to the website – and find out why I’m a big believer in whey (or if you are vegan I go for sprouted brown rice protein) and don’t want you using these soy products on the market.
